Yoshigoro's 5th son Eugene Takeo Ichinose married Harriet Toi. These were my Grandparents. Their 2nd eldest child Lester Yoshio Ichinose married Nancy Cykler of whom I am the eldest son, Peter Ichinose.
In each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again.
To tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. Doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before.
We are the storytellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those who have gone before us cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves.

Come, look with me inside this drawer,
In this box I've often seen,
At the pictures, black and white,
Faces proud, still, serene.
I wish I knew the people,
These strangers in the box,
Their names and all their memories
Are lost among my socks.
I wonder what their lives were like,
How did they spend their days?
What about their special times?
I'll never know their ways.
If only someone had taken time
To tell who, what, where, or when,
These faces of my heritage
Would come to life again.
Could this become the fate
Of the pictures we take today?
The faces and the memories
Someday to be passed away?
Make time to save your stories,
Seize the opportunity when it knocks,
Or someday you and yours could be
The strangers in the box.

This means many things to me. It is a gathering of Yoshigoro and Tome's descendants. It is a search for their origins in Japan and their journey to Hawaii. It is about how they lived and who they were. It is a sharing of how their descendants have contributed to society in Hawaii and beyond, their achievements and their trials, their ups and their downs and how their paths have affected so many around them over the years. Most significantly it is an understanding and an exercise of the mind to appreciate how ALL these things are connected and that gives us awareness of how every action we take and every road we choose affects everything and everyone around us in ways both negligible to significant and how so important that can be. It should inspire and encourage us to accept ourselves with all our gifts and all our deficits to strive to leave this world a better place because we were here. Our family history (blood or not) is the living foundation of the future.
