Samuel Masuo Ichinose

In Short

  

Samuel Masau Ichinose was born on November 12th 1907 in Moiliili, one of a pair of twins the other being his brother Eugene Takao Ichinose.

  

Growing up for Sam on a small farm in a large family was probably hard yet with time to find adventure.


Sam Married Catherine and they had 3 children: Lawrence Toshiaki, Amy Emiko and Miles Yoshiaki.


Sam’s love was boxing and he spent his entire life with that as a centerpiece. He also ran for and won political office and was involved with several businesses most prominent was Sad Sam’s bar. 


He traveled a lot around the world because of his boxing and overall he lived a very full and interesting life


I have been given a transcript of an interview Sam did with Charles Memminger (Charles is a national award-winning humor columnist, screenwriter, and author who is based in Hawaii) but it is too much to put here so I have dedicated a separate page called “Sam’s Interview”. Where I have selected parts for reading.

6/24/1933 Sam and Catherine get marriage license

9/19/1934 Birth of Lawernce Toshiaki

9/07/1936 Celebartion of Sam’s Japanese American boxing club winning the Hawaiian AAU boxing championship 2 years in a row

10/22/1937 The Japanese American Athletic Association has big dance with Sam being the dance’s general chairman

12/02/1937 Sam and Catherine have daughter  Amy Emiko 

4/02/1940 Sam’s boxing team goes to Boston

4/12/1940 Sam’s boxing team wins 2 national crowns in Boston

9/06/1940 Sam enters election as supervisor as a republican for the upcoming primary.

10/28/1940 Sam returns from Tokyo with wins in boxing

11/06/1940 It seems Sam did not win for Supervisor in election

11/15/1941 Sam buys the “Rio café” formally known as “Fukujju Shojudo” 

11/25/41 Says Sam will call the bar “Sad Sams” 

11/28/1941 Large page in paper congratulating Sam for his grand opening tomorrow of Sad Sam’s  

2/11/1942 Sam elected to Honolulu Camber of Commerce

4/15/1943 Sam and Catherine legally change their names to “Samuel Masua Ichinose” and Catherine Yeako Ichinose”.

6/15/1943 Notice of co-partnership for Sam Ichinose and Reginald K Ichinose for Sad Sam’s.

5/07/1946 Sam’s boxer Dado Marino beats Al Chavez and is now looking for world flyweight championship

7/11/1946 Sam’s boxer dado will fight for title in Glasgow Scotland

1/10/1947 Patterson may refuse to fight Dado says Sam

1/24/1947 Notice of co-partnership for Sam Ichinose and William M Ichinose for the Bamboo Inn restaurant.

2/10/1947  Marino Title fight in Scotland set 

3/21/1947 Patterson signs to defend title against Marino

4/01/1947  Sam’s title fight set for June 11th.

6/09/1947 Postponement till July 9th for fight.

6/27/1947 Marino-Patterson Bout hits $210,000 gate.

7/07/1947 Patterson-Marino fight postponed till the 18thbecause of Patterson medical issue  and Sam is not happy.

7/17/1947 Fight postponed again as Patterson collapses on way to fight.

7/31/1947 British Board of boxing strips Patterson of title and new champion will be the winner of a fight between Marino and Rinty Monaghan from Belfast.

8/02/1947 Sam says we was robbed by fight issues

8/27/1947 Dado will get $20,000 for fight against Rinty in Ireland on  October 20th.

9/30/1947 Marino in Londen to train for fight.

10/18/1947 Sam mad that the British Boxing Board may reverse recognizing winner of fight as champion.

10/20/1947 Marino loses by decision against Rinty as Sam calls it  a stinking decision. Marino got the only 2 knockdowns in the fight.

11/18/1947 Sam Celebrates his birthday in Los Angeles

1/20/1948 Sam is listed as a board member for the “Young Buddhist 

Association”

2/16/1948 Sam is quoted as saying “if Takeshita loses Tuesday I’m going to stand on Fort and Hotel street and sell pencils.

2/18/1948 Takeshita wins.

5/11/1948 Dado Marino is listed as #2 in world

8/20/1948 Sam announces run for House 4th district.

11/04/1948 Sam elected to the 4th district house.

3/01/1949 Sam introduces a measure calling for a $1,250,000 war memorial stadium to be built in Kapiolani Park.

3/16/1949 Sam proposed bill for the establishment of military, navy and air cadet training schools in Hawaii.

6/16/1950 License denied for Sad Sam Ichinose owner of the Bamboo Inn alcohol dispenser general license.

1950 Dado Marino wins the flyweight championship by beating England’s Terry Allen.

11/05/1950 Sam says he is leaving the house of representatives to run for the board because he an do more there.

11/08/1950 Sam wins a supervisor position on the board.

4/03/1952  Sam is asking the Honolulu police commission to establish a division of narcotics.

4/19/1952 Sam urges city to acquire all sand beaches as the only way to insure preservation of sand beaches.

11/06/1952 Sam loses reelection for board of supervisors.

4/20/1957 Grand reopening of Sad Sam’s Bar

4/23/1963 Amy Emiko, Sams daughter, became the bride of Robert Okamura in Los Angeles.

4/07/1976 Sam sells Sad Sam’s bar

12/24/1987 Sam, son Larence and grandson Samson unhurt as fire rips through his home.

8/04/1988 Sam will be inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame on October 29th in Los Angeles. 

1/25/1993 Sam passes away

Catherine Yeako Momita

Sam's Wife

  

She was born of February 22nd 1911 in Ola’a Hawaii (Ola’a is located on the island of Hawaii and was historically a coffee and sugar plantation site). 

She was the eldest Daughter of Kihei and Tomoe Momita. Kihei was born in Senzu-mura, Kaho-gun, Fukuoka-ken, Japan and worked as a carpenter for Ola’a Sugar company and died June 1st 1935 and is buried in Moiliili Japanese Cemetery. Catherines mother was Tomoe Hosaka born October 3rd 1899 in Kama-shi, Fukuoka, Japan and passed July 28th 1931 also buried in Moiliili Japanese Cemetery.

Catherine attended schools in Ola’a and in Fukuoka Japan when she llived with her grandparents.

When she returned to Hawaii, she finished schooling and moved to Honolulu to become a hairdresser.

This was when she met Sam and gave up hairdressing to help run Sad Sam’s Bar.

After WW2 she gave up the restaurant business to become a fulltime mother and Homemaker. 

She passed away May 5th 1999

Lawarence was born 9/12/1934 and passed on 12/17/2002

 Lawrence was involved with musical plays and sports in school and the YMCA during the late 40's and the early 50's. 


June 24 1960 there is a marriage record that Lawrence married Misako Takano


July 1st 1961 a daughter was born  Cecelia M. Ichinose born 7/1/62


May 1966 an ad shows Lawrence as a salesman for American Pacific Life.


June 20 1967 article shows a divorce from Mari T.


At some point Lawrence marries a Judy


Sept 2nd 1968 a daughter born named Laurie Hanako 


1969 shows Lawrence involved with boxing as a manager


April 22nd 1970 a son is born  named Samson Masuo 


In a 1973 Honolulu directory it shows Lawrence as a manager in Sad Sam's bar. 


1976 still involved with boxing


8/16/1987 Newspaper shows Public Auction by IRS code for Lawrence's property, Home and car.


12/21/2002 Lawrence passes away: Obit shows a Son "Samson", daughters "Cecelia and Laurie".

Amy Emiko Ichinose

Amy was born born 11/22/1936. and passed on 9/14/2010

Amy graduated from Kaimuki High school and Cannon's School of Business


Amy married on March 16th 1963 to Robert J Okamura in Los Angeles CA.


Amy and Robert had 2 children; Kathleen and Todd.


Amy passed September 14th 2010 in Cerritos CA.






Miles Yoshiaki Ichinose

Miles was born on December 23rd 1945 at Kuakini Hospital

Miles married Barbara Alderton on July 19th 1974 at Waiokeola Congregational Church.

(Barbara father was Albert Gareth Alderton from NY. He was born on 9/25/1921 and passed 5/01/2003.

He was involved in Finance. Barbara's mother was Geraldine Dorothy Webster born 8/23/1921 in Pittsfield MA. She passed on 5/6/2021 in Honolulu. Barbara has 4 siblings; Geri, Jane, Rod and Albert Jr)


Miles and barbara were both graduates of Kalani High School and the University of Hawaii.


When Miles Married he was an area supervisor for McDonalds restaurants.


In June 1977 Miles was promoted to Director of Operations for McDonalds in Hawaii.


November 25th 1980 Miles and Barbara had a daughter.


An October 1985 Article Miles is President of McDonalds restaurant operators Association of Hawaii.


In 1988 Miles was a Jefferson award winner which is associated with being a volunteer. 


5/1/2006 Miles wins the Golden Arch Award.


In September of 2019 Mile was part of the Hawaii Restaurant Association's Hall of Fame award


Miles was discouraged by his father to go into boxing and so Miles took a path to where he found his lifetime career with McDonalds and all the associated community work. He was a board member of the Ronald McDonald House, He served as president of the West Pearl Rotary Club and the Waipahu Business Association, a board member of the boys and girls club of  Ewa beach. He founded "Hug Mr. Bears" a support group for children and families among many other community support activities.


Miles and Barbara have 3 daughters; Keiko, Angela and April.
